A Leader in
Specialized Care
The Special Care Unit - a progressive, diverse, award-winning program
for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia
- shines brightly at The Washington Home. In a safe and therapeutic
setting, our special care residents enjoy an active and spontaneous
lifestyle. Through music, visual arts, and nature, we provide an environment
that strengthens self-esteem. Reminiscence, community service, and
therapeutic touch play important roles in resident care and support.
Despite
the difficult realities of memory loss, our special care residents
are an enthusiastic and spirited community. Vibrant and full of
energy, the Special Care Unit truly is the beacon of The Washington
Home.
Activities Play an Import Role
The Special Care Unit attracts many visitors and volunteers – pets,
babies, local students, families, and friends. Together, we sing,
we dance, we create, we socialize, and share our time in a variety
of
fun and meaningful ways. There is plenty going on – no
one on the unit is bored or isolated. However, we respect our
residents’ choice
to be alone or not participate, should he or she desire quiet
and privacy.
Safety is a Priority
Residents of The Washington Home’s Special Care Unit enjoy
their own private, brightly lit rooms, a secure outdoor courtyard,
and lounging,
dining, and visiting areas. Although special care residents
have the freedom to move about the unit, electronic bracelets and
coded
doors
protect them from becoming lost or wandering into inappropriate
areas. Our knowledgeable, safety-conscious staff is committed to
the dignity
and well being of each resident.
Quality Care
To provide the highest quality care for individuals with Alzheimer’s
disease, dementia, and memory loss, The Washington Home maintains
numerous affiliations with local hospitals, universities,
and other health care
organizations. Together, we are able to share a wealth of
knowledge and resources that yield significant benefits to the
people we serve.
In addition to having a highly qualified medical
director
and well-trained staff, our personnel are an interactive
group,
committed to discussing
any issues pertaining to the needs of our residents and their
families.
A Team Approach to Individualized Care
Our interdisciplinary care teams are specially trained in
Alzheimer’s
disease and dementia, and include a physician, nurses,
certified nursing assistants, a social worker, a nutritionist,
activity therapist,
and chaplain to assess and address the physical, spiritual,
and emotional needs of each resident. Family and friends
play an important role
in care planning. Together, the resident, family, and care
team create a plan that promotes good health and an enriched
quality of life.
The care team also recognizes the need to
support the friends
and family of the individual with memory loss, because the
effects of Alzheimer’s
disease and dementia reach well beyond the individual with
the condition.
