Judith Viorst, 2009 Art Buchwald Award Recipient
The 2009 Art Buchwald Award will be presented to Judith Viorst, acclaimed author and journalist, in recognition of her more than 20 years of service as a volunteer in the hospice Inpatient Unit at The Washington Home & Community Hospices. Ms. Viorst is internationally known for her best-selling books Necessary Losses and Imperfect Control, in which she explores our lack of candor about the last chapter of our lives. She is also author of the children's classic Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
All proceeds from the gala support the services and operation of The Washington Home & Community Hospices. The generosity of individuals, companies and corporations who support the gala make it possible for The Home to honor its policy of providing care to all who need it regardless of their ability to pay.
The Washington Home & Community Hospices, established in 1888, has long been known simply as "The Home". It is our goal to provide the feeling of security and comfort we all associate with home for those who live here, who rehabilitate here, and who need end-of-life care. Community Hospices provide care for patients wherever they call home at "Our Home, Your Home".
