In the years since our founding in 1888, The Washington Home has pioneered the concept of providing residential care from patients' perspectives and with their input.
Our facility at 3720 Upton Street, NW, is in a serene, wooded residential section of our nation's capital. The building was designed by renowned environmental psychologist and architect Walter Maleski:
- all rooms are private with windows looking over peaceful, rolling lawns
- rooms are grouped in self-contained 'communities' radiating out like streets from 'town squares' where nurses work at stations and residents gather to socialize
- each level of the three-floor building offers residents and family members direct access to outdoor gardens
- a family room and Library are available for family celebrations and gatherings
- a beauty shop and small store serve residents during the week
- the Garden Room, with it's beautiful center skylight and expansive view of the Barbara Bush Garden and fountain, offers white table cloth dining as well as space for games and activities
- an in-house kitchen provides three home-cooked meals for residents and patients each day
- an in-house laundry provides daily service
