The Washington Home and Community Hospices' Art Buchwald Award recipients are professor Randy Pausch and journalist Jeffrey Zaslow, co-authors of "The Last Lecture." Dr. Pausch, a professor of Computer Science and Human Computer Interaction and Design at Carnegie-Mellon Universisty, and Mr. Zaslow, a columnist for The Wall Street Journal, based their book on Dr. Pausch's final lecture after he learned that he had only months to live (he died in July, 2008).

The Art Buchwald Award honors those who help others face the challenges of life in its final stages.

Art Buchwald was a renowned humorist, author and Pulitzer Prize winner. He became a symbol of dying with dignity in 2006 when he made the courageous decision to forgo further medical treatment and enter Community Hospices' Inpatient Hospice Unit to live out his remaining days.
