AUTHOR JUDITH VIORST TO ENTERTAIN CHILDREN AT LOCAL BOOK READING

(Washington DC October 12 , 2009) Judith Viorst, acclaimed author and journalist, will read from her classic children's books at Sundaes and Stories at The Washington Home & Community Hospices on Sunday, October 18, 2009, from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m. at 3720 Upton Street, NW.

At this event, children will create their own ice cream sundaes and listen to Ms. Viorst read some of her children's books including The Tenth Best Thing About Barney and best-seller, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Tickets cost $20 per child (adults are free) and can be purchased on-line at www.communityhospices.org or http://sundaesandstories.eventbrite.com. Proceeds benefit The Washington Home & Community Hospices' programs and services for people who are aging, chronically and terminally ill.

Ms. Viorst. a volunteer in Community Hospices' Inpatient Unit for more than 20 years, is the 2009 recipient of The Washington Home & Community Hospices' Art Buchwald Award for helping others face the challenges of life in its final stages. Mr. Buchwald was a renowned humorist, Pulitzer Prize winner and Community Hospice patient.

The Washington Home & Community Hospices has served people who are elderly, chronically or terminally ill since 1888. Last year in The Washington Home:

  • 245 people received long-term residential care
  • 359 received comprehensive rehabilitation services
  • 151 people were cared for in our Alzheimer's and dementia unit

Last year Community Hospices served:

  • 1,640 terminally ill people and their families in the places where they lived in DC, Maryland and Virginia
  • 296 patients in the Inpatient Hospice Unit in the District
  • 1,459 people who lost a loved one through our bereavement support services
