A pioneer in healthcare, Community Hospices' Inpatient Unit was opened in 1978.  It is the first and only inpatient unit (IPU) in the District of Columbia, and it fulfills a vital community need for palliative symptom management for residents. Co-located with The Washington Home, a skilled nursing facility, the IPU  manages patients' pain and symptoms and provides support for their families.

 

Team of Dedicated Professionals. The IPU team of professionals specializes in palliative care:

  • Physician, Board Certified in Hospice & Palliative Medicine
  • Pharmacist with a specialty in Palliative Pharmacology
  • Registered Nurses, certified in hospice and palliative care
  • Certified Nursing Assistants
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker

  • Bereavement Services

24/7 Patient Care. The hospice team provides 24-hour symptom management to patients            
 in our family-friendly facility:

  • nine private rooms
  • children/adult/pet visiting hours 24/7
  • peaceful living room/lounge/kitchen and dining area                                                                    
  • private consultation room
  • patient-access to outdoor patio/fountain

Clear Admission Criteria. Community Hospices provides general inpatient care for patients who require pain and/or acute symptom management that cannot feasibly be provided in other settings including:

  • Complicated technical delivery of medication requiring RN and MD for calibration
  • Frequent assessment and medication titration by MD/RNevaluation by physician/nurse
  • Aggressive treatment  requiring skilled nursing care to control pain and other
    symptoms including:
             respiratory distress
             severe agitated delirium or acute anxiety or depression secondary to the end-stage
                   disease process
