Medical Expertise in the Atmosphere of Home

As many as 85 percent of the patients in our Subacute Rehabilitation Unit return to their homes following successful rehabilitation with the help of a team of professionals: physical, occupational, and speech therapist with bachelors and/or master's degrees in their respective fields. The therapists at The Washington Home strive to restore as much function as possible to our patients and to return them to their prior functional levels. In addition to our rehabilitation therapists, the subacute unit also has an on-site medical team consisting of a nurse practitioner, nurse manager and a physician who can attend to patients' medical needs.

In physical therapy, patients work on increasing strength, walking on even and uneven surfaces, gaining balance, negotiating stairs and building endurance. In occupational therapy, patients work on increasing strength and endurance to improve their activities of daily living including: bathing, dressing and personal hygiene. Occupational therapists also help patients improve their home management skills such as preparing meals and doing laundry and light cleaning. In speech therapy, patients work to improve their swallowing and memory deficits, voice dysfunction, and language barriers. If restoration of function is not possible, therapists work with patients and their families to help them use compensatory techniques to achieve their highest possible functional levels.
