Thought for the day:
I slept and dreamt that life was joy.
I awoke and saw that life was service.
I acted and behold, service was joy.
A lot has been happening at Community Hospice of Washington since my last Update!
Welcome to the eight new volunteers who have just completed the 20 hour training program and are now mentoring in the IPU. They join a great group of hospice volunteers who give their time so generously and have so much to contribute to the patients, their families and Community Hospice of Washington.. Thank you to all volunteers for your continuing support and dedication.
New IPU Clinical Manager
We welcome Barbara Wagner, the new Clinical Manager in the IPU. Barbara previously worked in the IPU as a hospice nurse and is pleased to be back in this new capacity. At her suggestion we have implemented a daily afternoon tea which is held for an hour at about 3:00pm. It has provided a sense of comfort and warmth for the families in the IPU and I thank all who have generously helped with this new service.
11th Hour Training Program Enhanced
Seven volunteers completed the 11th Hour Vigil training held on Saturday, March 20th. It was a full morning of training in the Calverton office and we are now ready to go. Dreema McAllister-Wilson and I are working on simplifying the logistics of this program and we will let you know as soon as changes are finalized. We now have 14 volunteers available for vigils as they are needed.
Rick Cothern, a dedicated volunteer for the past ten years, will be leaving the area in early May. he has made many contributions to the lives of patients and staff. Rick conducts weekly at The Washington Home a Poetry-in-Motion class and a Bible study class. His loyalty and dedication have been an inspiration to us all, and we are all sorry to see him leave
Save the date! On Wednesday, May 5th, the Washington Home and Hospice will host a farewell gathering at 2:30pm in honor of Rick.
All are invited to come and wish Rick well in his new adventure.
Jocelyn Hicks, an IPU volunteer for the past two years, has recently been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science from London University in the UK. It is an extremely high honor and we congratulate Jocelyn for this recognition.
