Healthy Cooking for One

August 9, 2019

Members of our bereavement group gathered to attend an informative presentation by Nutritionist Jill Peralta on "Healthy Cooking for One."

Jill discussed quick & nutritional food options that are not only easy to prepare, but delicious! Tasty samples included chickpea salad, fruits, and vegetables.

She also stressed the importance of “hydrating for health.” Since our bodies are about 60% water, drinking water helps to better regulate body temperature, assist in transporting nutrients throughout the body, and moisten the lungs and respiratory track for comfortable breathing. So, how much water do our bodies need? Jill recommends that we take our weight in pounds, divide it in half, and the result is approximately how many ounces you should be drinking every day!

So, if you weigh 130lbs, you should be drinking roughly 65 ounces of water per day (130÷2=65).

Attendee J. Knight shared: “I learned the importance of getting enough water. I’ve seen people walking around with water bottles, but I never understood why they were doing it.”  You can also spike your water with fresh fruit to enhance the flavor and entice oneself to drink more.

Quick and easy goes a long way to nourish the body, and participants enjoyed learning new recipes, sharing eating habits, and connecting in fellowship with one another.

“Many times, when a person is hurting they don’t stop to think about taking care of themselves,” says Bob Uhrig, Bereavement Coordinator. “This was an opportunity to bring that attention to the forefront and the realization that if we do take care of ourselves, other good things will follow.”
